The acrylic tube sections arrived today along with the largest enclosure. Below you can see the planned layout, though of course the tubes aren't 'installed' yet.There's room for another enclosure if I can think of a good reason to add it, but in all honesty three is probably plenty. I want to conserve funds for Project Earth Rover so unless someone can pitch a convincing rationale for adding another enclosure, this is probably as big as Hampture will get.
Next up; need to buy a dremel tool to make the holes for the tubes, and buy some kind of platform I can secure the enclosures to. Movin' forward!

ReplyDeleteGeorge: From Otterbox. And the other containers are advertised as watertight, just not down to the same depths as the Otterbox. I definitely plan to test their limits before putting the hamsters in. As for the bedroom being small, hamsters are naturally burrowing creatures. They prefer confined spaces for sleeping and will construct a nest if none are available.
ReplyDeleteforfunz; If I made the tubes much shorter there would be no point in having them. Don't worry about them getting cold, remember how Megafucker didn't use the heater during the Lake mission? This type of plastic is an excellent thermal insulator, besides which I won't be deploying in cold water to begin with (which means indoor pool missions only until spring I guess)
If possible, shouldn't 'L' shaped bits of tubing, installed pointing upwards be installed at the end of each connecting tube, so in case of breach, the water is confined to one enclosure?
ReplyDeleteInteresting idea, but that would greatly complicate the design and I'm pretty sure other enclosures would still flood if they're on the same level.
ReplyDeleteA simpler solution is just to be very very sure that it doesn't, and cannot, leak.
indoor pool missions sound great! a little less mad, but more stable for long term missions.
ReplyDeleteafter the completion of hampture expeditions you should look into submerging it in a fishtank on a constant basis. that would be quite spectacular, although the encloses should probably be arranged in a line to be able to do so.
