some ideas here: Have a water reservoir under the base, connected to the outside water. Grow algae in this. they don't need much light, so led's will do. Be sure to take blue and red LED's!The nutrients for the algae come from dissolved salts in the water (from composting leaves fallen into the water or soap contamination etc). You can then use the oxygen produced by the algae to keep the lil adventurers alive without lifesupport. Tiny conveyorbelt that puls algae out of the water to feed hamsters? Also, by having the tank under the base, you can add stones for weight and growing surface. I think algae are a better solution because of easier automation, plants having to be watered, fertilised, prone to funghi ect.
